If you die in service, whilst a member of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), subject to certain qualifying conditions detailed, the following benefits are payable:-

Lump sum death grant

A lump sum death grant of two times your final pay is payable, no matter  how long you have been a member of the LGPS. The Nottinghamshire Pension Fund has absolute discretion in the payment of the death grant and you are strongly advised to complete a death grant nomination form which you can download and print from the forms page

This form allows you to nominate one or more individuals or organisations to receive payment from any death grant payable.

Widow's, widower’s or civil partner’s pensions

Short term pension
Your widow, widower or civil partner will receive a short term pension, payable at the same rate as your pay, for three months following your death.  This is payable no matter how long you have been a member of the LGPS.

If you have any eligible children in the care of your widow, widower or civil partner the short term pension will be paid for six months.

Long term pension
If you have at least 3 months membership in the LGPS, the short term pension is followed by a long-term pension, payable to your husband, wife or civil partner. This commences when the short term pension ends and is payable for life.

Your widow will receive a long term pension which is generally half the pension you would have received if you had retired early due to ill health on the date of death.

Your husband or civil partner will receive a long-term pension which will be based on your membership from 6th April 1988 only, unless you have opted for your membership prior to 6th April 1988 to count for widower's pension purposes.

Pensions for eligible children

Eligible children include your legitimate, adopted or dependent children who are:
  • under age 17
  • under age 23 and, since before age 17, have been in full-time education or in training for a trade, profession or vocation
  • dependent by reason of incapacity which arose whilst a child.

Children's pensions are payable, following your death, no matter how long you have been a member of the LGPS.
