Death of a deferred member
Who should my next of kin notify if I die?
Your widow, widower, civil partner , nominated cohabiting partner , next-of-kin or person dealing with your Estate must immediately inform the Pensions Office of the death. We will require the following information regarding the deceased deferred pensioner:- The name, address and date of death
- The national insurance number
- The name and address of the next of kin
- The name and address of the person dealing with the Estate, if different from the next of kin.
What benefits will be paid if I die?
The benefits that will be paid if you die while a deferred beneficiary depend on your date of leaving.If you ceased paying pension contributions before 1st April 2008
If you ceased paying pension contributions before 1st April 2008 the following benefits are payable:-- A Death Grant equal to three times the up to date value of your deferred annual pension
The Nottinghamshire Pension Fund has absolute discretion in the payment of the death grant and you are strongly advised to complete a Death Grant Nomination form which can be downloaded and printed from the Forms page. This form allows you to nominate one or more individuals or organisations to receive payment from any death grant payable.
A survivor's pension is payable if you are married or in a registered civil partnership at the date of death.
- A widow will receive a pension based on your total membership,which will include any cost of living increases from your date of leaving to the date of your death, provided she was married to you whilst you were a member of the Scheme. If you married your wife after you left the scheme, only your post 5th April 1978 contracted-out membership is used.
- A widower will receive a pension based on your membership from 6th April 1988. In certain circumstances you may be able to count service from 1st April 1972. The pension will include any cost of living increases from your date of leaving to the date of your death.
- A registered civil partner will receive a pension based on your membership from 6th April 1988 only, which will include any cost of living increases from your date of leaving to the date of your death.
Pensions for eligible childrenThe amount of pension depends on the number of children you have. If your deferred pension has been subject to a reduction following a divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership, a child's pension is based on the full (unreduced) deferred pension. If you have more than one child, Nottinghamshire Pension funds will decide how to share the children’s pension between them.
