Life cover - family protection
If you die in service, whilst a member of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), subject to certain qualifying conditions detailed, the following benefits are payable:-
Lump sum death grant
A lump sum death grant of three times your final pay is payable, no matter how long you have been a member of the LGPS. The Nottinghamshire Pension Fund has absolute discretion in the payment of the death grant and you are strongly advised to complete a Death Grant Nomination form which can be downloaded and printed from the Forms page. This form allows you to nominate one or more individuals or organisations to receive payment from any death grant payable.
Widow's, widower’s civil partner’s or cohabiting partner's pensions
If you die in service, survivor benefits will be payable for life to your spouse, civil partner or nominated cohabiting partner . Your membership will be increased to the amount of service you would have accrued had you worked to age 65.
Your widow will receive a pension based on your total membership.
Your widower will receive a pension based on your total membership from 6th April 1988. In certain circumstances the pension will be based on your total membership from 1st April 1972
Your civil partner, or nominated cohabiting partner will receive a pension based on your total membership from 6th April 1988 only.
Pensions for eligible children
Eligible children include your legitimate, adopted or dependent children who are:
- under age 18
- under age 23 and, since before age 18, have been in full-time education or in training for a trade, profession or vocation
- dependent by reason of incapacity which arose whilst a child.
Children's pensions are payable, following your death, no matter how long you have been a member of the LGPS. The amount payable depends on the number of children you have, and is payable in equal shares to each child. It is based on the pension you would have received had you retired due to ill health on your date of death.
