Death after retirement - new scheme

Who should my next of kin notify if I die after retirement?

Your widow, widower, civil partner , nominated cohabiting partner , next-of-kin or person dealing with your Estate must immediately inform the Pensions Office of the death, otherwise an overpayment may occur. Contact details can be found on the Contacting us page

We will require the following information regarding the deceased pensioner:

  • The name, address and date of death
  • The pay and national insurance number, this can be found on the pensioner's latest pay slip
  • The name and address of the next of kin
  • The name and address of the person dealing with the Estate, if different from the next of kin.

What benefits will be paid if I die after retirement?

If you die after retirement, your pension benefits will cease and the following benefits may then be payable:

A lump sum death grant
A post retirement lump sum death grant is payable which is equal to ten years pension, less any pension already paid, if you die under the age of 75.

Death Grant Nomination Form
The Nottinghamshire Pension fund has absolute discretion in the payment of a death grant and you are strongly advised to complete a death grant nomination form, which can be downloaded and printed from the Forms page. This form allows you to nominate one or more individuals or organisations to receive payment from any death grant payable.

Survivor's pension
A survivor's pension is payable if you were married, in a registered civil partnership, or have a nominated cohabiting partner at the date of death.

  • A widow will receive a pension based on your total membership, which will include any cost of living increases from your date of leaving to the date of your death, provided she was married to you whilst you were a member of the Scheme. If you married your wife after you left the scheme, only your post 5 April 1978 contracted-out membership is used.
  • In the majority of cases, a widower will receive a pension based on all your membership. The pension will include any cost of living increases from your date of leaving to the date of your death.
  • A registered civil partner will receive a pension based on your membership from 6th April 1988 only, which will include any cost of living increases from your date of leaving to the date of your death.
  • A nominated cohabiting partner will receive a pension based on your membership from 6th April 1988 only, which will include any cost of living increases from your date of leaving to the date of your death.

Pensions for eligible children
The amount of pension depends on the number of eligible children you have and is payable in equal shares to each child. If your pension has been subject to a reduction following a divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership, a child's pension is based on the full unreduced pension.
