When the Government reformed public service pension schemes in 2014 and 2015 they introduced protections for older scheme members. The Court of Appeal subsequently ruled that younger members of the Judges and Firefighters Pension schemes were discriminated against because the protections did not apply to them. The Government has confirmed that there will be changes to all public sector schemes, including our own LGPS, to remove this age discrimination.
The Government and the Local Government Scheme Advisory Board have now confirmed what this means for members of the LGPS.
We are advised that the impact to our scheme members is likely to be minimal, and the vast majority will see no changes to their benefits and, if there are changes, then these will be applied automatically without the need for members to make individual claims.
